Holiday tea for prospective students

Date: January 6, 2008
Time: 2-4 p.m.
Location: Home of Barbara Powell ‘62

One of the big hits of the Bryn Mawr Club of Boston’s Holiday Party for Prospective students on Sunday January 6, 2008 was the Bryn Mawr Intense Intellectual Commit-mints! In a tin that can fit in your purse. Clever and useful. Almost thirty people including 11 prospective students, their parents and alumnae Barbara Powell ’62, Margaret Hoag ’86, Jane Lifton ’76, Sharon Gershman ’00, Sarah Tan ’04, Bejay Ugale ’00, and host Kyoko Yamamoto ’01 sipped tea, sampled grapes and sweets and talked about Bryn Mawr. Research from the Admissions Office indicates that a personal relationship with an alumna is key to enhancing prospective students’ chances of enrolling at Bryn Mawr.

We used the same format as in years past: Tea from 2-4 on a Sunday. Alums spoke about “What surprised me most about Bryn Mawr.” Vignettes included: the international emphasis and opportunity to meet students from all over the world, the college’s receptiveness to starting a rowing team, the way acting at Bryn Mawr was unexpected preparation for being a lawyer, work study opportunities which turned into careers–for a math major and a linguistics major, and of course, the lifelong friendships.

The prospective students were a lively and articulate bunch. They attended small private schools (Commonwealth, Beacon in Newton), elite public schools (Boston Latin, Boston University Academy ), and good suburban high schools (Brookline High, Lexington High). Two were early admits—one Posse and one student who wanted to do East Asian Studies. After the alums spoke, the prospects asked questions. Their questions were specific; they had done their homework. How difficult was it to do a double major? How about a double major in chemistry and English? How does Praxis work? Can you tell us about Peace and Conflict studies? How easy is it to do Junior Year Abroad? Was it possible to do a Junior Year Abroad if you majored in science? How can you play a varsity sport and get your work done? How does the relationship with Swarthmore and Penn differ from the relationship with Haverford? How do the women of Haverford and Bryn Mawr get along? Is there competition or friendship?

The students who had been admitted loved the Facebook discussions with current undergraduates. They found them welcoming and informative and eager to answer questions. One student who had been telephoned by an alumna to come to the Holiday Party, left the reception fired up and determined to apply.

Send-off reception for Boston area Class of 2011

Date: June 24, 2007
Time: 2-4 p.m.
Location: Home of Irena Bronstein ‘67

The Bryn Mawr Club of Boston hosted its annual Send-Off Reception for entering freshwomen. After chatting over light refreshments, our group of 30 came together while newly graduated Emily Anne Lewis ‘07, and current undergraduates Julie O’Neil ‘10, Katharine Penzo ‘09, and Ahele Purkayastha ‘09 enthusiastically shared their various Bryn Mawr experiences with the 10 new freshwomen and their parents. Each offered helpful information about the academic life at Bryn Mawr as well as the social and club activities at the college and in the surrounding communities.

The event was coordinated by Kyoko Yamamoto ‘01, Admissions Rep for the Club, and Nancy Thayer, Senior Assistant Director for Admissions at the college. Jane Lifton ‘76 assisted Kyoko making phone calls and helping with the set up for the event, and Margaret Hoag ‘86 moderated the students’ shared experiences about the college and the questions asked by the freshwomen and their parents. Recent and not so recent alumnae Bejay Ugale ‘00, Sharon Gershman ‘00, Sarah Gant ‘81, and Debbie Jackson White ‘68 also offered support. The event was appreciated by the freshwomen and their parents as evidenced by an email from one of the dads: “I have to tell you that Leah is so excited about going to Bryn Mawr, and I think these events both build her enthusiasm and help her prepare.”

Undergraduates dazzle prospects at admissions reception

Date: January 7, 2007
Time: 2-4 p.m.
Location: Home of Barbara Powell ‘62

The Bryn Mawr Club of Boston with the help of the Alumnae Association, brought together high school students and their parents, current undergraduates, and alumnae in the area, to further engage their interest in the College. The event was hosted at the home of Barbara Powell ‘62. Despite the unusually warm weather and the big Patriots game, 45 enthusiastic people assembled over cookies and tea, to hear the current undergrads and alumnae talk about what they enjoyed and what influenced them most about their Bryn Mawr experience.

Emily Norman ‘08 talked about her role and experiences as a Traditions Mistress and the supportive environment of Bryn Mawr. Sarah Tan ‘04 shared her knowledge about the various tri-college academic programs and options. Bejay Ugale ‘00, Sharon Gershman ‘00 and Stephanie Richardson ‘05 also spoke enthusiastically about their varied experiences at Bryn Mawr. Alumnae and current undergraduates all voiced their agreement on the amazing friends, professors and colleagues they had met at Bryn Mawr.

Kyoko Yamamoto ‘01 coordinated this annual event for the Club, along with Nancy Thaler for Admissions, and Cynthia Washington for the Alumnae Association. Board members Jane Lifton ‘76 and Barbara Powell ‘62 assisted Kyoko in making phone calls, organizing, and hosting the event. The afternoon’s gathering ended on a surprising note when Jane discovered that one of the dads attending the event was a high school classmate of hers! We look forward to seeing many of these faces again in June when the Bryn Mawr Club of Boston hosts its annual Send-Off Reception for area high school students soon to be this year’s Bryn Mawr freshwomen!

Send-off for Boston area Class of 2010

Date: June 25, 2006
Location: Home of Irena Bronstein ‘67

Fifteen members of the class of 2010 gathered at the home of Irena Bronstein ‘67 in Newton for the Bryn Mawr Send Off party. Each year, the Club invites all the newest Boston area students who will be attending Bryn Mawr in the fall to a gathering to meet one another and make friends before they arrive on campus. This year three current students: Julia Keith ‘08, McCurdy Miller ‘08, and Francesca Marangell ‘09 were available to answer questions.

The questions ranged from the workload at Bryn Mawr, to the sports programs, to theatre and dance. Ten parents attended with their daughters; they had many practical questions about life in the dorms, stress, and maintaining contact with mom and dad! After the formal question and answer session, the students stayed to chat with each other and ask more questions of the students and recent graduates.

In addition to Dr. Bronstein, Club Vice President Margaret Hoag ‘86, Club Treasurer Jane Lifton ‘76 and Admissions Rep Kyoko Yamamoto ‘01 joined the party. Our alums included Bejay Ugale ‘00, Sharon Gershman ‘00, Nicole Megatulski ‘04 and Jacqueline Dasilva ‘05. Thanks to all the alumnae who attended and who helped organize the party. Special thanks to Julia, McCurdy and Francesca for being available to answer questions. Good luck to the Boston area members of the class of 2010!

Send-off tea for Boston area Class of 2009

Date: August 7, 2005
Location: Home of Irena Bronstein ‘67

The tea to send off our newest Mawrters was a great success. About a dozen women and three parents came. Irena Bronstein ‘67, her husband Gene Bonte, and their son Ben were our hosts. We asked the women to introduce themselves and tell us their dorm so we could figure out who would be living together. Ursula Spont ‘03 was invaluable in answering questions. At the end of the program, we taught them the BMC cheer and then left them to bond with each other which they did. The magnificent reception hosts did a lot of fetching and carrying from train stations. A wonderful party thanks to Irena, Ursula, and Jyotsna Advani’s planning. Notes for next year: we might have an even bigger turnout in June. Also, having a current student available to answer questions would be very helpful.
