May Day baskets

Date: April 29, 2007
Time: 11 a.m.
Location: Home of Luann Abrahams ’87

A dozen alums representing five decades (plus three Bryn Mawr daughters) gathered to decorate baskets and make cards for our alumnae aged 80 and above. After snacking on strawberries and cream and other treats, the team got busy with the creative part of the day.
Once again we are grateful to Sonia and Alisa Amador, grade 5, daughters of Rosi Amador ’81, for setting the bar for basket decor so high. This year they were joined by Sophia MacKay, grade 3, daughter of Brenda Breed ’87, who ensured each basket was filled with flowers as it came off the decorating assembly line. The group then split up to set out on their delivery rounds. 47 baskets were delivered and an additional 30 cards were mailed to those outside the delivery area.

Thank-you notes began arriving the very next day from our gracious and grateful recipients, via email (Letitia Upton ’37 is an AOL member at age 92!) and snail mail. A brief sampling:

“Just a note to tell you how much I *loved* getting the May Day basket! Most of all I loved meeting the three Bryn Mawr graduates who brought it – they were lovely – I can’t believe I was ever that young! Hard to believe that time marches on so inexorably.” – Nancy Butler ’42

“Many thanks for the charming little green basket and purple pansies from the Bryn Mawr Club. Springtime has arrived – and the gift made my day!” – Lois Schuster ’45

“Another May Day basket to captivate me and my neighbors. My favorite – pansies! I can return you last year’s basket in hopes of an ’08 refill! I had just come back from a Bach Cantata recital to find it on my door. What a joy to be over 80!” – Hildreth Burnett ’45

Hardworking owls included Cornelia Robart ’61, Jane Lifton ’76, Rosi Amador ’81, Brenda Breed ’87, Luann Abrahams ’87, Erica Bernstein ’92, Sara Goodrich ’03, Jennifer Koch ’03, Rachel Hochberg ’04, and Lilah Rahn-Lee ’05. Thanks also to Mary Woll ’54, Barbara Powell ’62, Peggy Deifenderfer MSS ’67 and Margaret Hoag ’86 for helping to deliver the
baskets.
