Bryn Mawr Running the World

Date: June 29, 2008
Location: New Charles River Run

This spring, Mawrters in eight states came together to participate in 5 km runs/walks as part of the Alumnae Association’s “Bryn Mawr Women Running the World” program. Here in the Boston area, five alumnae ranging from the class of ‘79 to the class of ‘07 tested their stamina at the New Charles River Run on Sunday, June 29th. On the scene were Katharine Davidge ʼ79, Artemis Hionides ʼ82, Polly Osell Kienle ʼ89, Kate Long ʼ00 (who ran the 7.5 mile race), and Abbey Mann ʼ07. We had
perfect runnerʼs weather, misty, grey, and cool-ish, for this sold-out race that took us on a loop on both sides of the Charles River near Harvard Square. All of us were quite pleased with our own performance and with how the race was organized and executed. Upon meeting after the race, our group agreed that we would like to continue participating in runs together throughout the summer.

Other area alums are welcome to join us in this. In the longer term, some women are already thinking about fall races, namely the 5k Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on September 7 and the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women on Monday, October 13.

Please join us during the summer and/or in the fall – bring your honed running stamina, your dream of it or your unabashed lack of it. If interested, contact Anna Fox Doherty ʼ97 or Polly Osell Kienle ʼ89.

Executive Board members sight bear at Mohonk

Along with the lectures (by Art and Archeology faculty Rick Hamilton, Peter Magee and Dale Kinney), the rock climbing, the geology lecture, the juggler and unicyclist, the boating, the chance to chat with 80 other Bryn Mawrtyrs at the Alumnae Association’s Bryn Mawr in the Hudson Valley at Mohonk Mountain House in New York on July 14-16, was an unscheduled bear sighting. As reported by treasurer Jane Lifton:

Having stopped to enjoy the magnificent view of the valley and to quietly listen to the gentle sounds of nature, our reverie was suddenly interrupted by an all too familiar sound below us. Quickly the three of us wondered… people? (no trail) deer? (too heavy). Suddenly we spotted the source of the noise below us in the ravine… a black bear!! At about 8 feet tall, the bear was down on all fours munching peacefully on some leaves but… yikes!! Although a sign at the entrance to the preserve had warned that if you encountered a bear you should… “make yourself appear big, make a loud noise, don’t show fear” …gut instinct prevailed as we clutched each other in whispered fear and ran! So much for having jokingly practiced our bear responses on earlier hikes! However, the rationale that we were high up on the trail and the bear was down below us in the ravine inspired one member of our intrepid little group, Margaret Hoag, to once again peer over the edge to try to take his picture. “Does your camera make a noise?” Jessica Bass Kirk asked. Since the bear seemed a little too far away for a clear picture anyway, fear once again prevailed… “bears do run fast” …and we decided not to linger!
